It's easy to worry about our children. We want to protect them and we can feel concerned when they get upset about their eating and their bodies. Mothers are a big influence on daughters and can affect them positively.

Research by Dove shows that body image and appearance are taboo topics for many mothers and daughters. 65% of nine to sixteen year old girls say they hide their feelings about their appearance from their mums and 57% say they find it difficult talking to their mums about their body. 

Mums also admit to feeling uncomfortable discussing body image and appearance with their daughters- in fact, over one in ten mothers find it easier to tackle subjects like drugs, boyfriends and pregnancies that their daughter's body image. 

Inspire a greater sense of self esteem

'Talk to her' a booklet created by the Dove Team as part of their Campaign for Real Beauty aims to inspire a greater sense of self-esteem in young girls and women. Authored by psychotherapist Dr Susie Orbach, 'Talk to her' was created to give mums practical advice and information on how to broach issues relating to body image and appearance with their children.

'Talk to her' is intended to make discussing body image and appearance easier for mums and to help mothers promote a more positive and wide ranging definition of beauty in the next generation of women.
