It's a fact of life that as we age our skin changes. It becomes visibly thinner, drier and begins to lose some of its tone and elasticity. A regular cleansing routine is one of the key steps to keeping facial skin looking young and healthy.

Cleaning faceSoft, clean skin

In addition to a bad cleansing and moisturising regime, many factors contribute to skin ageing, including environmental damage and hormonal changes.

As we all know, but don't always put into practice, cleansing and moisturising are a crucial part of women's everyday beauty routine. We've devised a simple cleansing and moisturising tips on how we can maximise our basic beauty routine to achieve even softer and more beautiful skin.

Cleanse

Cleansing creates the base on which everything else is built when it comes to face care. If the base is weak, skin will never look its best. Cleansing in the evening not only removes make-up and impurities but helps rejuvenate cells and eliminate the day's pollution.

Apply cleanser

Make sure hands are completely clean before you begin cleansing, or you could be adding more impurities to the face. Scoop about a teaspoon of cleanser and spread it onto the fingertips of both hands.

Massage

Dab a little over the face and neck and slowly massage the cream into the skin with fingertips. Take particular care around the sensitive area of skin under your eyes. Work upwards with anti clockwise movements to boost blood flow to the face and soften wrinkles.

Remove

Always leave the cleanser on for a minute or two to give it sufficient time to absorb the dirt and make-up. Use cotton wool to gently remove the cleanser – or for an even deeper cleanse, soak the cloth in warm water. Hold it to the face for a few seconds and then very gently rub your face to remove the remaining cream.

Rinse

It is important to be very gentle when removing cleanser from skin. Do not stretch or drag the skin, use a patting action - this will prevent the eventual sagging of the skin as it delays the loss of muscle tone. After cleansing, immediately splash on cold water to close pores. Never wash your face with hot water

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise

Every woman, no matter what age, skin colour or skin type, should moisturise her skin. Faces are exposed to the drying effect of the weather and central heating 24 hours a day. Moisturisers trap in moisture and plump skin cells which is critical to maintaining young and healthy skin. Without moisture, skin will not remain smooth and supple.

Apply

After cleansing, place a tissue over your face absorb any excess water, then apply the moisturiser.

Using the tips of the fingers, dot moisturising cream lightly all over the face. Press the fingers of both hands into the centre of the forehead and work the cream slowly outwards. Pat the cream gently around the eyes as this is a very sensitive area.

Massage

Work the cream around the jaw line, chin and mouth with the middle fingers of both hands.  Massage the cream over the throat with alternating hands, using upward strokes from collarbone to chin.
