What’s hot this autumn?

Colourful autumn colours don’t just belong on trees. The days may be getting shorter but that’s no reason to ditch your favourite colours and clothe yourself head-to-toe in back-to-school blacks and greys.

Women with hangerTurn the brights on

Not too keen on the usual autumnal blacks, browns and navies? This is your year, with bright colours tipped to shine throughout the season. Coats, knits and separates in feminine pinks, stunning oranges, sunshine yellows, gorgeous greens and bold blues – with tights to match – have been hitting the catwalks and are coming your way to brighten up the autumn.

Go big – on everything!

Outsize is in this autumn with oversized, chunky jumpers perfect for wearing over skinny jeans and long cardigans which are great when it’s not quite cold enough for a coat. But it’s not just big knits that are in. Oversized suit jackets are one of the season’s trends, and again, great to wear with narrow trousers. And, don’t forget the bag – that should be big, too!

Which of autumn’s key shapes will be best for you?

If you’re not feeling up to exposing loads of leg you’ll be happy to know that while the mini is still a key item in this autumn’s collections, the pencil skirt is making a comeback. But who will these ultra-glamorous items suit best? If you’re curvy, with a small waist, a pencil skirt can look great – and even better if you team it up with a wide belt to show off your svelte middle. A very feminine look.

The masculine look

Models have been strutting the catwalks in mannish trousers, jackets and suits this season – but would the masculine look suit you? It depends a lot on what trousers you choose to wear with your jacket. Not surprisingly, slim cigarette pants look best on people who have long slim legs, though not if you’re over-endowed in the bum department, while wide-legged trousers can be more flattering for thicker legs and pear shapes. Jacket-wise, avoid longer lengths or shortie jackets if you’re a pear.

The little black dress

LBDs are in this season – something that will delight many fashion fans – as they’re great for day and evening wear, and they’re so slimming. But do they flatter everyone? It really depends on choosing a shape that will suit you. Wraps are perfect if you’re curvy and can give you shape if you’re not, while V-necks can be great if you’ve got an hourglass figure.

Care for your clothes

You’ve celebrated the new season with some fashion-statement sweaters. We’ve got some tips for keeping them gorgeous.

Banish bobbling

It’s one of the eternal fashion problems – how do you stop those fab autumn woollies from piling? The answer is a simple pillow case – just pop your favourite jumper inside one before you wash it, tie it up and voilà – a clean-as-a-whistle woolie with not a bobble in sight.

Quick dry

Fed up with waiting for that favourite sweater to dry? Pop a paper bag inside it, spread it out and it’ll be ready to wear before you know it.

To fold, or to hang?

How should you store your woollies to keep them in tip-top condition? The answer’s simple: if it’s woven, hang it and let the creases drop out. If it’s knitted, fold it. Simple.
